Mapping the Terrain: South Asians and Ethnic Media in BC

With the increasing numbers of South Asian immigrant communities in Metro Vancouver (almost 10% of the total population), their Ethnic media are also growing at fast pace. Ethnic media hold opportunities for creating awareness about settlement, integration, racialization and civic engagement by representing the immigrant communities who are at risk of lacking access to information and media due to different constraints, e.g., language being the most significant. Nevertheless, ethnic media are also facing serious challenges, including financial constraints, lack of professional staff, distribution and circulation issues, maintaining balance between local and homeland news and information, ensuring quality and so on. Using qualitative research methods (interviews, focus group discussions and a research workshop), this thesis will analyse the role, contribution, practices, opportunities and challenges faced by ethnic media in Metro Vancouver, Canada.
