Immigrant Financial Security: An Analysis of Differential Savings Patterns

This research project examines the economic integration of immigrants to Canada, specifically their saving and investment behaviour. This study extends the concept of saving to include home ownership and adds a cultural dimension to the act of saving. Traditional economics papers analyzing saving behaviour look at saving as a result of income and household wealth accumulation. Few papers remark on the beliefs and motives of the individuals under examination and how their history or identity might influence how or why they save. Understanding if and why immigrants are saving money will shed light on the long-term effects of migration on saving in Canada and help us to understand how migration might affect retirement planning.
